BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT • ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE • STRATEGIC GROWTH

Every Business Needs Business Development. AI Just Makes It Better.

When people talk about growing a business, the conversation nearly always revolves around marketing, sales or the latest AI tool. Yet one of the most important commercial functions is often missing completely—business development.

Over the years, I have seen this first-hand. Businesses invest heavily in marketing campaigns, CRM systems, automation platforms and sales teams, but very few invest in a dedicated business development function. Marketing agencies are a perfect example. Business development fits naturally within their business model, yet many agencies don't employ business developers because they simply don't understand the profession well enough.

I don't believe that's because business owners don't want to grow. I believe it's because business development is one of the least understood disciplines in business. Much of the work happens away from the office through research, networking, commercial planning, relationship building and opportunity identification. Because business owners can't always see that work taking place, they have to place a high level of trust in the person carrying it out.

That uncertainty often results in businesses relying entirely on salespeople, marketing teams or referrals to generate new opportunities. While those approaches all have their place, none of them replace structured business development.

Business development has never been replaced by AI. It has simply evolved because of it.

Artificial intelligence has changed the profession dramatically, but not in the way many people expected. AI hasn't removed the need for business developers. Instead, it has removed much of the manual work that once consumed their time.

Research that once took hours can now be completed in minutes. Businesses can be qualified faster. Commercial opportunities become easier to identify. Owners gain greater visibility into activity, pipelines and performance than ever before. AI provides information and speed, but commercial judgement, relationship building and strategic thinking still belong to people.

The role itself has evolved as well. The traditional image of the business developer knocking on doors and relying solely on cold calls belongs to a different era. Today's business developer needs to understand strategic management, analyse businesses before making contact, identify genuine commercial opportunities and build healthier pipelines based on quality rather than volume.

This is where I believe many businesses are still getting it wrong. They continue searching for more leads instead of building a structured business development function that consistently finds better opportunities. Technology can strengthen that function, but it cannot replace the experience required to understand businesses, identify commercial potential and build long-term relationships.

Throughout this article, I'll explain why AI and business development are not competing with one another. They are becoming one of the strongest commercial partnerships a business can build.

Every business needs business developers. The difference between growing businesses and struggling businesses is having the right ones, supported by the right AI.

AI • BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT • PRODUCTIVITY

AI Hasn't Replaced Business Development. It Has Evolved It.

One of the biggest misconceptions surrounding artificial intelligence is that it will replace business developers. I don't believe that for one second. What AI has actually done is transform how business development is carried out, allowing professionals to work faster, smarter and far more strategically than ever before.

When I first started qualifying businesses, it wasn't unusual to spend twenty minutes researching a single prospect. You would review the website, investigate the company, understand their market, identify opportunities and decide whether they were worth pursuing. It was a thorough process, but it was also time-consuming.

Today, AI can complete much of that research in a fraction of the time while maintaining a high level of quality. Research, qualification, opportunity analysis and commercial intelligence can all be generated within minutes, allowing business developers to make better decisions much earlier in the process.

Within our own AI-Human Agency Growth System™, the Direct Mail Growth Engine™ demonstrates exactly what this looks like. A process that once took between two and three hours—including qualification, creating personalised letters, printing them and organising an efficient delivery route—can now be completed in around twenty minutes. That isn't simply a time saving; it's a completely different way of working.

AI doesn't replace the business developer. It removes the manual work that stops them doing what they do best.

Unfortunately, I still believe most businesses are only scratching the surface of what AI can do. Many use it to write social media posts, generate emails or answer simple questions. There is absolutely nothing wrong with starting there, but it shouldn't be where the journey ends.

I've encouraged friends and family to spend just thirty minutes every day learning AI. Some listen, many don't. The businesses that ignore it today will almost certainly spend the next twelve to twenty-four months trying to catch those that embraced it early.

I've been working with AI since 2022, using it every single day. During that time it has helped me become a better system designer, product manager, developer, salesperson and strategist. The technology has never replaced my role; it has strengthened every part of it.

Faster Research
Smarter Qualification
Commercial Intelligence
Structured Workflows
Higher Productivity
Better Decisions

The biggest advantage isn't simply working faster. It's having the freedom to work differently. Instead of spending hours on repetitive administration, business developers can build stronger pipelines, spend more time speaking to prospects, strengthen relationships or even enjoy a better work-life balance. The choice is theirs.

Specialist AI systems take this even further. After completing a direct mail campaign, for example, you could move into a platform such as Prospexto™, capture businesses individually or in campaigns, qualify every prospect, assess the commercial opportunity, identify the most appropriate outreach method and generate a structured execution plan. The important point is that every prospect is treated differently because every business is different.

This is exactly why I don't believe AI will ever replace business developers. As automation becomes more common, genuine human interaction becomes even more valuable. Businesses still buy from people they trust, and trust is something that cannot be automated.

As my old mentor Richard Fishwick always used to say, "People buy from people, not robots."

AI can provide research, data, recommendations and analysis. It can never replace commercial judgement, meaningful conversations or long-term relationships. Those remain the responsibility of the business developer.

If you take one thing away from this section, let it be this: start using AI today. Whether that's investing in a simple ChatGPT subscription or adopting specialist AI systems built for your industry, the businesses that begin learning now will be the businesses leading tomorrow.

THE FUTURE • AI SYSTEMS • BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT

The Future Belongs to Businesses That Combine AI with Great People

When people ask me what business development will look like over the next five to ten years, I always give the same answer. It won't disappear—it will simply evolve again.

Personally, I'd like to be travelling the world in a motorhome or sitting on a beach somewhere, but for everyone still working in business development the landscape will be very different from today.

CRM systems will still exist, but they will become only one part of a much larger ecosystem. Businesses won't rely on a single AI platform to do everything. Instead, they'll have specialist AI systems for every part of their operation, each designed to perform a specific role exceptionally well.

That doesn't mean business development becomes automatic. There won't be a button that magically grows your business overnight. Success will still depend on implementation, consistency and showing up every day. AI provides the tools, but people still have to use them properly.

AI will make business development faster. People will make it successful.

As more businesses adopt AI-generated emails, automated messages and digital outreach, I believe something interesting will happen. Human interaction will become even more valuable. Businesses will appreciate genuine conversations because they'll become increasingly rare.

That means business developers should continue developing the skills that technology cannot replace. Being personable. Understanding people. Understanding their business. Understanding their industry. AI can provide the knowledge, but it's still the business developer who turns that knowledge into meaningful conversations.

When AI prepares you before the first conversation, trust begins to build much faster. Instead of asking generic questions, you already understand the business, their challenges and where the opportunities may exist. That immediately changes the quality of the discussion.

Preparation
Commercial Knowledge
Human Relationships
Structured Systems
AI Intelligence
Better Decisions

Preparation will also become one of the biggest competitive advantages. Many business developers aren't held back by a lack of ability—they're held back by a lack of organisation. They miss follow-ups, lose opportunities and spend too much time deciding what to do next.

This is where structured AI systems become incredibly powerful. Instead of relying on memory or spreadsheets, the system guides you through each stage of the process. You simply review the information, make commercial decisions and move to the next step. Even someone who considers themselves highly disorganised can work in a structured and consistent way because the system provides the framework.

I also believe businesses will move away from one AI trying to do everything. Just as companies use different software for accounting, CRM and finance today, they'll use specialist AI systems for different commercial tasks. One system might generate leads, another qualify prospects, another assess commercial opportunities and another recommend the best outreach strategy.

Business developers will simply log into the system that supports the task they're working on, complete that stage, then move seamlessly into the next specialist system. Each AI engine will become exceptionally good at one job, while the business developer connects everything together and makes the decisions that ultimately drive growth.

The future belongs to businesses that combine specialist AI systems with skilled people.

CONCLUSION

The Future of Business Development Starts Today

If there's one thing I hope you take away from this article, it's that business development isn't disappearing. It's evolving faster than ever before, and the businesses that evolve with it will have a significant advantage over those that don't.

The first step is making sure you have the right people driving your business development. People who understand commercial growth, embrace change and are already learning how AI can strengthen the way they work. AI doesn't replace great business developers; it allows great business developers to become even better.

The second step is moving away from disconnected tools and towards structured AI systems. Businesses that build operational systems around their business development activities will become more organised, more consistent and ultimately more competitive.

Finally, commit to learning AI every single day. Spend at least an hour exploring new ideas, asking questions, building workflows and improving your understanding. Don't be afraid of AI. It doesn't bite. Start with simple conversations, let it learn about you while you learn about it, and gradually build your confidence. Small improvements made consistently over time become significant competitive advantages.

The businesses that keep learning will always stay ahead of those that stop.
