Why UK SMEs Are Still Struggling With Digital Transformation

Digital transformation does not mean every business needs to suddenly become an AI company. For me, it is about understanding where a business wants to go, finding the bottlenecks and then deciding whether digital technology can genuinely help move the needle.

When I researched the marketing industry in 2025, one thing stood out to me. A lot of businesses seemed to think, “I have a website, my work is done.” They build the website, put it live and then leave it sitting there for months or even years. It is almost as if they believe the website has this forever life cycle where, once it exists, it will just continue doing its job without needing to change, improve or develop.

I think a lot of businesses look at digital transformation in exactly the same way. Many businesses were never built around the ideology of digital this and digital that. They were built around people, relationships, trust, phone calls, meetings, recommendations and ways of working that may have been successful for decades. So when digital transformation comes along, they can almost look at it like a tribe seeing a horse and cart for the first time. They can see that it exists and they can probably see that it might be useful, but they do not necessarily understand how it fits into the world they already know.

01
Transformation Has To Earn Its Place

A Business Does Not Need To Change Just Because Technology Has

Some businesses have been operating successfully for ten, twenty or even thirty years. They were built around human connection and they may already be profitable, so from their point of view the obvious question is: why should they suddenly change?

Human Connection Built A Lot Of These Businesses

A lot of businesses were built before any of this existed. They were built around human connection, people speaking to people, relationships, trust, phone calls, meetings and recommendations. That was how the business worked, and in many cases it still works perfectly well today. So from their point of view, why would digital transformation suddenly make such a difference now?

I can understand that thinking because, from where they are standing, maybe it does not look like it would make much difference at all. But from the point of view of someone who understands these systems and works with them, digital transformation can make a difference, and in some cases it can make a huge difference. The important point is that the technology does not necessarily have to replace the human side of the business. It can improve what happens around it by making information easier to access, reducing unnecessary work, helping people communicate and making the business more efficient without taking away the relationships that made the company successful in the first place.

The Question

If the business is already profitable and the owner is happy, does it actually need digital transformation?

Sometimes The Answer Is No

I do not think every business falls behind because it does not use digital technology or because it has not gone through some form of digital transformation. For me, transformation means growth. If you have been in business for ten years or more, there is a good possibility that the company is already making a profit. It has customers, it has processes and it has found a way of operating that works.

Digital transformation could potentially push that business further along the food chain. It could help it grow, become more efficient or find opportunities that it would never otherwise have seen. But not every business owner wants that. Some people are perfectly happy with where they are. They make enough money, they have enough customers and they do not want to turn the business into something bigger. I think it is completely fine to be that way.

Growth Mindset

I Want To Push The Needle

If the owner wants more growth, digital transformation can become a way of finding the next opportunity without destroying what already works.

No Need To Change

I Am Happy Where I Am

If the business is profitable, stable and giving the owner the life they want, there is nothing wrong with keeping it exactly where it is.

What Would I Do?

If I had a business that I started in the 90s, it was profitable, it gave me a nice salary and my family were happy, what would I do? Well, me being me, I probably would not be satisfied with just coasting. When I get to one level, I tend to want more, and then more again. If I wanted to grow that business, I would start looking at ways to grow it and I would probably bring in a digital transformation consultant and ask what I could do to slightly push the needle.

I would not necessarily want someone to rip the company apart. I would want them to look at what already works and then tell me where the opportunities are. It all depends on the niche and how the company is set up because no business is the same and no niche is the same. White is not always black here.

But if I had to pick one obvious place to start, I would probably look at the website. That sounds simple, but there is a huge difference between having a website and having a website that actually works for the business. Look at the SEO, look at GEO, look at the content, the structure and how people are finding the company. Within six to twelve months, that website could potentially be working for you instead of sitting idle like a placeholder.

The First Digital Transformation Lesson

Digital transformation does not always mean rebuilding a company. Sometimes it means taking something the business already owns and finally making it do a proper job.

02
Fear, Noise And AI

Business Owners Are Hearing So Much About AI That It Is Easy To Understand Why Some Are Frightened

I think a lot of business owners are frightened of digital and AI, and I do not think that is their fault. There is so much talk about it now that people can easily start believing everything is about to change overnight.

There Is Too Much Noise

If I am honest, I think there is far too much talk about AI. The companies behind this technology have talked about it constantly, the seed was planted and it caught on. Now AI seems to be everywhere. That naturally frightens some people because they are constantly hearing about automation, jobs disappearing, businesses changing and machines doing things that only humans could do a few years ago.

My wife was absolutely convinced AI was not coming. Her view was basically, “AI? No chance.” I have been saying for the last three years that it was coming, and it is one of the reasons I planned the next five years of my own life and business the way I have. Even today, she can see what is coming in a way she could not before, and I think that change in thinking is happening to a lot of people.

That does not mean I believe AI is suddenly going to flick a switch and we all go up in smoke. I do not think that is what is going to happen. I think this change will be much more gradual than a lot of people suggest, and businesses will move at different speeds depending on what they do, how they operate and what their customers actually want.

The Balance

Not every business needs to race towards AI. Some businesses staying human and familiar may actually be part of what keeps the market balanced.

I Think It Is Important That Some Businesses Stay Normal

I do not think businesses are necessarily delaying anything by not changing immediately, and I do not believe every business needs to change. In fact, I think it is important that some businesses stay as they are and stay normal because that keeps the balance. Not every company has to become completely digital, not every process has to become automated and not every customer interaction needs AI sitting in the middle of it.

This is not going to happen overnight anyway, and I do not think it will happen as quickly as some people say. There is a lot of excitement and fear around AI that can make it sound as though the whole world will operate differently next year. I do not believe change happens like that. I also believe governments may eventually try to slow parts of the process down if they decide things are moving too quickly, although whether they actually have the power to do that is another question.

01 / EXISTING BUSINESS

Keep What Already Works

A successful business should not throw away proven relationships and processes simply because a new technology exists.

02 / DIGITAL ADDITION

Add Technology Where It Helps

A digital system should improve part of the business rather than forcing the whole company to change around the system.

03 / HUMAN VALUE

Keep Human Connection

Businesses that rely on trust and relationships do not suddenly need to remove the people that made those relationships valuable.

04 / GRADUAL CHANGE

Move At The Right Speed

Different businesses will adopt AI and digital systems at different speeds, and there is nothing wrong with that.

Most Businesses Will Add AI Around The Edges First

Again, it all depends on the niche and how the business has been built. If you have a company with a huge amount of human interaction, you are not going to suddenly turn it into a fully automated AI business overnight. What I think will happen is that businesses will start adding different digital and AI elements where they make sense.

For example, our company AI-Human Growth Systems specialises in building lead generation systems. A company might contact us because it wants to bring an AI-human lead generation system into the business to help grow its sales force. That does not mean replacing the sales force or removing the human side of the company. It means building something around the team that helps create opportunities, organise information and support growth while the humans continue doing the conversations, relationships and decision-making that matter.

The AI-Human Lesson

The realistic future is not always AI replacing the human business. It is often AI sitting around the human business and helping it work better.

03
Problem Before Technology

Find The Bottleneck Before You Start Looking For The Digital Solution

Do what is right for your business and do what fits. Digital transformation should begin with what the company actually needs, not with whatever piece of technology happens to be popular this month.

Where Is The Business Actually Struggling?

This, for me, is where digital transformation should really begin. Where are the bottlenecks? Where are things going wrong? Where is the business losing money, wasting time or missing opportunities? It might be purchasing. Perhaps the company is spending too much money, buying badly or using a process that has not been reviewed properly for years.

It might be sales. Perhaps leads are being lost, perhaps there are not enough leads coming into the company in the first place, or perhaps there are plenty of enquiries but the follow-up is poor. It could be the website. The business may have built it five years ago and simply left it sitting there as a placeholder. It exists, but it is not actually doing anything useful.

That is where something as simple as SEO and GEO could potentially make a big difference. Give it six to twelve months and suddenly the website could begin working for the business instead of just existing in the background. To me, that is digital transformation. It does not have to mean rebuilding the whole company. Sometimes it is simply finding something that is not working properly and improving it.

The Starting Point

If there is no problem to solve and no growth target to reach, why are you transforming anything?

Digital Transformation Does Not Have To Be Massive

When people hear the words digital transformation, I think they often imagine something huge, expensive and complicated. It sounds as though somebody is going to walk into the company, switch everything off and rebuild it from the ground up. But it does not have to be like that. Sometimes you are only trying to push the needle slightly.

If I had a profitable company and I wanted more growth, I might bring in a digital transformation consultant and ask what could be improved. Where could we make more money? Where could we save money? Where are we wasting time? Where are we losing customers or leads? The purpose is not to destroy the business that already works. It is to find opportunities inside it.

STEP 01

Find The Bottleneck

Identify where the business is losing time, money, leads, efficiency or opportunity.

STEP 02

Decide What Needs Improving

Be clear whether the target is more leads, better purchasing, better efficiency, more traffic or something completely different.

STEP 03

Choose What Fits

Only then look at the system, automation, digital tool or AI that genuinely fits that business problem.

STEP 04

Measure The Difference

Decide whether the change actually moved the business forward. If it did not, adjust it rather than blindly adding more technology.

The Better Digital Transformation Approach

Digital transformation should not start with technology. It should start with something inside the business that is worth improving.

04
Growth Without Losing The Business

Not Every Business Needs To Become An AI Business

If the business is profitable, the customers are happy and the owner has the life they want, there is nothing wrong with staying exactly where they are. Digital transformation only makes sense when there is a reason behind it.

Growth Is A Choice

Not every business needs to change, not every business needs AI and not every process needs automation. I actually think it is important that some companies stay exactly as they are because that keeps the balance. If you have a business that has been running for ten, fifteen or twenty years and it is profitable, why should somebody suddenly tell you that you have to change it?

You might have customers, make a good living and have a family that is perfectly happy with the life the business provides. There is nothing wrong with that. Transformation, for me, is about growth, so if you do not want more growth, perhaps you do not need to transform anything.

Me personally, I know what I am like. If I reached one level, I would probably want the next one and then the next one after that. So I would start looking for ways to push the business further along the food chain. That is when digital transformation becomes interesting, not because somebody has told me I have to do it, but because I want more from the company.

The Useful Approach

Improve What Needs Improving

Keep what already works, identify a real business opportunity and add digital technology where it can genuinely improve the result.

The Wrong Approach

Change Because Everybody Else Is

Do not rebuild a profitable company simply because AI, automation or digital transformation happens to be the current conversation.

Human Businesses Are Not Going To Disappear Overnight

I do not believe businesses are suddenly going to become fully automated AI companies overnight, especially businesses that have been built around human interaction. If the whole company is based on relationships, conversations, meetings, trust and people dealing with people, there is no sensible reason to suddenly remove all of that.

I think businesses will add technology gradually and only where it makes sense. A lead generation system might support the sales team, better data might help managers make decisions, automation could remove repetitive admin or a better website could generate more opportunities. The humans are still there and the relationships are still there. The digital systems simply help the business operate better around them.

I Do Not Think This Happens As Quickly As People Say

There is so much noise around AI at the moment that people can easily believe everything is going to disappear tomorrow. Jobs are going, businesses are changing and everything is apparently about to become automated. I do not think it happens like that. I think it will take time, and probably a lot of time, because businesses do not all move together and customers do not all want the same thing.

I also believe governments may eventually try to slow parts of that process down if they feel technology is moving too quickly, although whether they actually have enough power to do that remains to be seen. Either way, I do not think we wake up one morning and suddenly the whole business world has changed. Some companies will move quickly, some will move slowly and some probably will not move much at all. I think that is probably healthy.

The Digital Takeover View

Do what is right for your business. If you are happy where you are, stay there. If you want more, find where digital transformation can genuinely help push the needle.

The Final Transformation Lesson

Do not change your business because somebody else says you should. Change it because you understand what you want to improve and you believe the change can help you get there.

Final Digital Transformation Field Note

Digital Transformation Should Fit The Business, Not Force The Business To Fit The Technology

I think digital transformation has become much bigger in people’s minds than it sometimes needs to be. The words themselves make it sound as though a business has to change everything, become completely digital and start replacing people with AI. I do not believe that is what good digital transformation should look like.

Some businesses do not need to change at all. They are profitable, the owner is happy and the company is doing exactly what it was built to do. There is nothing wrong with that. Other businesses want more. They want more sales, better efficiency, better systems, more opportunities or simply a way of moving further along the food chain.

For those businesses, digital transformation can be incredibly valuable, but the starting point should always be the business itself. Where are the bottlenecks? Where are you losing money? Where are you losing leads? What is taking too long? What are you trying to improve?

Once you understand that, then look at the technology. It could be something as simple as finally making the website work properly through SEO and GEO. It might be a better purchasing system. It could be an AI-human lead generation system supporting the sales force. It might be automation that removes repetitive work and gives people more time to do the things humans are actually good at.

No business is the same and no niche is the same, which is why I do not believe there is one digital transformation plan that everybody should follow. The right answer is the one that fits your business.

Do what is right for your business. Find the problem, decide what you want to improve and then use technology where it genuinely helps you push the needle.

The human side of business is not disappearing tomorrow, and I do not think it should. Technology should support the business rather than becoming the business simply because everybody else is talking about it.

Digital transformation is not about replacing everything that came before it. It is about deciding whether technology can help take the business where you want it to go next.
